Huckabee: I'm Grateful Obama Quoted Bible in Newtown Shooting Speech

By    |   Monday, 17 December 2012 03:19 PM EST

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee applauds President Barack Obama for citing a portion of the Bible in his address at Sunday’s memorial service for the 26 people killed at a school in Newtown, Conn. last week.

“I’m grateful the president quoted Scripture,” Huckabee told Fox News Monday. “He talked verses from the New Testament and spoke openly. And that’s good. We need that kind of comfort.”

Obama spoke of heaven, noted Huckabee, while pushing for more discussion of religion in public life, Politico reports. “Those are words of hope. If we don’t believe that there is such a place, that there is something beyond this physical life we live, then there is no hope.”

The president’s words came from Corinthians:

“Do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, . . . inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands.”
