Once a proud member of the House Freedom Caucus, Rep. Justin Amash, R-Mich., has become "disenchanted" with the group's unabated loyalty to President Donald Trump, now attending meetings "infrequently," according to CNN.
"From the time the president was elected, I was urging them to remain independent and to be willing to push back against the president where they thought he was wrong," Amash told CNN. "They've decided to stick with the president time and again, even where they disagree with him privately."
Rep. Amash admitted in the interview he has weighed leaving the group, because blind President Trump loyalty has "delegitimized objections to the president."
"They are good, kind people," Amash said of his House Freedom Caucus colleagues. "I may have my disagreements with some of the current approach, but I'd still take them over pretty much anyone in Congress."
Amash tweeted in late February his loyalty lies with the Constitution and not his caucus and certainly not the president.
"If you think my job is to support the president one hundred percent, then you don't understand what it means to be a representative in Congress," Amash tweeted. "My job is to support the Constitution one hundred percent and to represent all the people of my district by protecting their rights."
Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, and Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., are House Freedom Caucus founders and staunch President Trump loyalists, striking back against Democratic-led investigations of the White House, President Trump, his family, and campaign.
