Republican Reps. Jim Jordan of Ohio and Rodney Davis of Illinois sent a letter to the U.S. Capitol Police chief on Monday demanding security footage related to the arrests of seven Stephen Colbert staffers last week.
The seven arrests, including actor Robert Smigel who plays "Triumph the Insult Comic Dog" on Colbert's show, made headlines Thursday after being arrested and charged with unlawful entry for allegedly entering a House building in the Capitol Complex illegally.
Jordan and Davis claim in their letter that the seven gained access to the building through House Intelligence Committee Chair Adam Schiff, D-Calif., and Rep. Jake Auchincloss, D-Mass., and disturbed "several Republican members, including 'banging' on their office doors."
"To help us understand how these individuals could gain access to the House office building after hours and roam the complex unescorted with the apparent intent of harassing Republican office, we respectfully request the following material," the letter read.
"All reports, witness statements, and other material related to the arrest of individuals associated with The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on June 16, 2022; and all security footage and still photographs related to the arrest," it added.
The news comes after a congressional source reportedly told the Washington Examiner that the Colbert crew members were asked to leave the House building before their arrests for not having proper media credentials.
However, the crew allegedly returned later in the day, creating a substantial disturbance by banging on Republican congressional doors at night.
"They knew what they were doing was wrong," the source added.
