Survey: Nearly Half of Israelis Expect Another Holocaust

By    |   Monday, 13 April 2015 06:10 PM EDT

Almost half of Israelis say they think a second Holocaust could happen, an increase over last year's survey by the Foundation for the Benefit of Holocaust Victims in Israel.

The annual survey was released Monday, just days before Holocaust Remembrance Day, which is Thursday. It found that 46 percent of Israelis think a Holocaust could happen again, which is a 5-point increase from last year, Haaretz is reporting.

Forty-seven percent of Holocaust survivors and their relatives also said another Holocaust is likely.

According to the most recent report by the Anti-Defamation League, there were 912 anti-Semitic incidents around the world in 2014, up 21 percent from 2013.

Those numbers don't include the attacks on a kosher supermarket in Paris in January and the shooting at a Copenhagen synagogue in February.

The Holocaust survivors report also found that 46 percent predict that future generations will forget the Holocaust, up 9 percentage points from 2014, The Times of Israel reported.

The Foundation for the Benefit of Holocaust Victims in Israel report also highlighted the poverty level of Holocaust survivors living in Israel, which found that of the 189,000 Holocaust survivors who live in the Jewish state, 45,000 are living below the poverty line.
