The White House is not pushing for a temporary payroll tax cut at this time, but President Donald Trump is looking at "all options," White House Deputy Press Secretary Hogan Gidley said Tuesday.
"He's looking at all options out there to try and give people back so much of the hard-earned money they've made," Gidley told Fox News' "America's Newsroom," in response to a Washington Post report that the administration was considering the idea as a way to boost the economy.
The first tax cuts and the changes to the corporate tax code led to "this incredible expansion in our economy," said Gidley, who also criticized the growing reports in the media that there will be a recession by 2021.
"They wanted so many of these lies about the president to be true," said Gidley, complaining that first the Russia collusion story was pushed, and then "a racist lie," and now a recession, rather than reporting about the "incredible nature" of our economy.
Meanwhile, the administration has talked about all types of options, but Trump has "taken this economy to new heights we never thought possible. So many detractors on the left said they could never happen. We are here, we are flourishing and our economy is better than the rest of the world's economy and everybody knows it."
He also denied reports that the Chinese tariffs are damaging the U.S, economy, and said it's time to hammer out a trade deal.
Trump has a "great relationship" with China's President Xi Jinping, added Gidley, but he won't make a deal that doesn't protect Americans and industries.
