CNN/ORC Poll: Hillary's Popularity Slides After Email Scandal

By    |   Monday, 16 March 2015 05:55 PM EDT

Hillary Clinton's popularity is plummeting in the wake of an email scandal that threatens to derail her planned presidential campaign.

The results of a CNN/ORC poll released Monday afternoon show 53 percent of people have a favorable opinion of Clinton. That's down from 59 percent last November, 63 percent two years ago, and a high of 69 percent in September 2011.

A combined 51 percent of people said Clinton's use of a private email address and a home-based server during her time as secretary of state was either very serious or somewhat serious. Fifty-one percent think she has not done enough to explain her reasons for using the email system.

Another 51 percent think Clinton did something wrong by forgoing a government email account in favor of a private one.

Despite the backlash, 57 percent of people surveyed said the characteristic of "Someone you would be proud to have as president" applies to Clinton. That's up from 50 percent one year ago.

The survey was conducted after Clinton's press conference last Tuesday during which she tried to explain why she used a private email system while working in the Obama administration.

The scandal resulted in calls for her to abandon her assumed White House plans, while other critics want to see her subpoenaed regarding the investigation into the 2012 Benghazi attacks on the U.S. consulate in Libya that killed a U.S. ambassador and three other Americans.

One law expert even said Clinton could have broken the law and could be jailed if she mishandled classified material on a nongovernment email server.

A report over the weekend, meanwhile, claims President Barack Obama's senior adviser Valerie Jarrett first leaked the details of Clinton's use of the private email server to the press.
