By    |   Monday, 11 July 2011 12:27 PM EDT

Sections of America's Midwest, Southeast, and the Plains are bracing for a heat wave this week. Heat advisories will remain in effect in 15 states through at least Tuesday, according to CNN.

The advisories mean the states are expected to reach at least 105 degrees Fahrenheit.

In addition, excessive heat warnings have been issued for the following cities: St. Louis and Kansas City, Mo.; Memphis, Tenn.; Tulsa, Okla.; and Evansville, Ind.

In these regions the heat index — defined as how hot one's body feels because of the combined impact of heat and humidity — may reach 110 to 115 degrees.

The warnings and advisories follow record high temperatures over the past week in several cities including Wichita, Kan., and Oklahoma City, Okla.

Thunderstorms are projected to develop in the Plains and provide some relief around midweek.

The 15 affected states are Kansas, Nebraska, Texas, Oklahoma, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama.
