An armed man who fired shots through the door of a luxury Hawaii hotel room and barricaded himself inside was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a nearly 10-hour standoff with police, a local TV station reported Sunday.

The Kahala Hotel in Honolulu, Hawaii, was placed on lockdown around 6 p.m. Saturday evening and guests told to shelter in place after a man fired a gun, locked himself inside a hotel room and then fired several more shots through the door, TV station KHON2 News reported, citing Honolulu police.

A spokeswoman for the police department could not immediately be reached.

"Thankfully the security guard wasn't standing in front of the door," police Captain Brian Lynch told reporters while the standoff was ongoing. "Responding units were able to contain the threat."

A SWAT team entered the barricaded hotel room around 3:30 a.m. and found the suspect dead, according to KHON2.

The station reported that there were no other injuries and that officials are still looking into a motive for the shooting. Officials believe the suspect was in the military.

Videos on social media showed guests sheltering in the hotel's ballroom overnight. An eyewitness told Reuters about 75-80 people were in the ballroom.

"We are deeply saddened by the tragedy that occurred last night on our property and we are focused on supporting our guests and employees at this time," the Kahala Hotel and Resort said in a statement, adding that they were working with the Honolulu Police Department as law enforcement conducts an investigation.
