Al-Qaida Gitmo Detainee Given Kitten for Good Behavior

Friday, 17 August 2012 09:32 AM EDT

Good behavior by a “high value” al-Qaida member imprisoned at Gitmo has apparently earned the man an odd reward — a kitten. The Washington Post’s In the Loop column reports that Majid Khan, who has agreed to testify against a planner of the 9/11 attack, has been given a kitten for his help.

Word of the kitten comes from Carlos Warner, a lawyer representing Muhammad Rahim, who worked as a translator for Osama bin Laden. The lawyer shared a brief letter from his client with Post that read: “Dear Mr. Warner — Majid Khan has a cat.”

Khan, considered a “high-value” detainee, is an alleged member of al-Qaida who was held in secret prisons for several years before being sent to Guantanamo. His lawyer, Wells Dixon, and a Defense Department spokesman would neither confirm or deny the story.

“It could be true,” the spokesman told the Post. “But it might not. I just can’t confirm or deny.”
