GSA Official: Las Vegas Event ‘Completely Unacceptable’

Wednesday, 11 April 2012 10:33 AM EDT

The acting head of the General Services Administration posted a YouTube video on the GSA website to slam employees involved in the $800,000 Las Vegas training conference.

Dan Tangherlini said in the video that “there were violations of travel rules, acquisition rules, and good conduct,” The Washington Post reports.

“Those responsible violated rules of common sense, the spirit of public service, and the trust taxpayers have placed in all of us,” he added while urging employees to read the report on the debacle by Inspector General Brian Miller.

The scandal already has led to seven managers being fired or placed on administrative leave. Administrator Martha Johnson resigned, the Post reports.

The scandal is far from over with four congressional hearings on the matter scheduled for next week. Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., said that several of those involved in the conference received bonuses for their work amounting to as much as several thousand dollars.

Lead organizer of the event Jeff Neely received a $9,000 bonus even though the committee in charge of such rewards recommended against it, according to the Post.

Neely is currently on administrative leave.
