Experts: Another Terror Attack Is Certain

By    |   Friday, 22 January 2010 12:47 PM EST

A new group aims to prove to ordinary Americans that the threat from Islamic terrorists is so severe that they must press for stronger action against terror.

William Saxton and Peter Leitner told Newsmax TV’s Ashley Martella that they founded Citizens for National Security because they believe the only way any action will be taken is be is if ordinary citizens became involved.

“It’s all well and good to have a bureaucracy and all of the departments and agencies that deal with this, but historically, I think in this case it is the common, ordinary citizen that counts,” Saxton said. “Our principal objectives are to educate and then to motivate, hopefully to activate common, ordinary citizens to do something meaningful in the war against those who want to change our way of life.”

The group, which operates as a nonprofit with a volunteer staff, hopes to inform citizens about who the nation’s enemies are and how they operate, as well as what individuals can do.

Leitner, who previously served in the defense secretary’s office, said the underwear bomber scored a major propaganda victory for al-Qaida on Christmas Day when he boarded a Detroit-bound flight from Amsterdam.

“One of the things bin Laden said a couple years ago, which is most instructive is that for every dollar that he spends on terrorism for actions against the United States, the U.S. spend over a million dollars of spending in return,” Leitner said. “And at a million-to-one ratio, which I think is conservative … they can fight this war forever and simply deplete our resources just from a financial standpoint.

“Then if you look from a psychological standpoint — the social dislocation it engenders among our population with people looking at each other with suspicion on airplanes — it’s an extremely effective means of attacking the United States.”

Treating terrorists who see themselves as fighting a war against America as common criminals doesn’t work and is an exercise in political correctness, Leitner says.

“This is a war, whether we have formally declared war or not,” he said. “The other party to this equation is fighting a war, and you don’t fight a war by giving people parking tickets.”

Another terror attack could be imminent because recent history shows that al-Qaida remains determined to strike, Saxton says.

“The left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing or who is in charge,” Saxton said regarding how the fight against the terrorists has been undertaken.
