Billionaire Jeff Greene, a Democratic candidate for Florida governor, has drawn the ire of the National Rifle Association with a new campaign mailer showing school children in the crosshairs of the NRA.
The mailer shows a school hallway with children-shaped targets. The targets display the NRA's emblem, the newspaper said. The words: "AR Practice" are right below the emblem.
The mailer reads: "Jeff Greene for Florida," and it quotes the candidate: "As a father, I won’t stand by while the NRA turns our kids into targets."
Greene is also quoted in the mailer as saying: "Gun violence has ravaged our state and families."
Seventeen people died in a school shooting in Parkland, Florida in February.
The NRA is blasting the mailer.
"As a mother, grandmother and a proud NRA member for decades, I find his mailer repulsive," NRA Florida lobbyist Marion Hammer said. "It is clear that Jeff Greene is bankrupt of ideas, and he has to resort to these dumb ideas to try and get attention for himself and his campaign. When people can't win on fact, they have to resort to cheap stunts like this."
Greene is a South Florida real estate billionaire and one of five Democratic candidates vying for the nomination.
