Franklin Graham: Father Never Changed His Message

The Rev. Billy Graham should be remembered for never getting off the message that people need God's saving grace, his son, Franklin Graham, says.

"My father took this message of God's love to the world. He never changed that message," Graham said Wednesday on CNN's "Piers Morgan Live."

Graham has asked people to pray for his father, who is home after suffering an infection he got a few days after his 95th birthday celebration on Nov. 7.

"His vitals are good. But he's just extremely weak, and at 95 you don't have a lot of reserves to draw from," Graham told Morgan.

Billy Graham is the same age as former South African President Nelson Mandela, who died last week. Though the two never met, Franklin Graham said they corresponded.

Mandela was in the middle of serving a 27-year prison sentence when Graham led an outdoor meeting in South Africa in 1973. He would agree to preach the crusade only if the segregationist South African government allowed whites and blacks to sit together.

Morgan asked if there is anyone today who can fill Billy Graham's shoes as minister to the nation. Franklin Graham aid there are many great preachers in the country, "and I'm sure God will raise up somebody."

The position he reached wasn't anything Billy Graham lobbied for or attained to, his son said. "It's just something that God did."

"My father has always felt that he was somewhat of a turtle on a fencepost," he said. " He realizes that God put him in that position that he had all those years."
