More than 20,000 signed on to U.S. Christian group's petition for Netflix to cancel a series they say "mocks God's wisdom," according to The Guardian, but the problem is the series, "Good Omens," never aired on Netflix.
It is an Amazon Prime production, leading to the Twitter mocking of the wisdom of Christians signing the petition.
"I love that they are going to write to Netflix to try and get #GoodOmens cancelled. Says it all really," the screenplay writer Neil Gaiman tweeted.
The TV series was adapted from Gaiman and Terry Pratchett's novel "Good Omens."
"This is so beautiful ... Promise me you won't tell them?" Gaiman followed in another tweet.
The petition was circulated by Return to Order, part of the U.S. Foundation for a Christian Civilization, and has more than 20,000 signatures.
"This series presents devils and Satanists as normal and even good, where they merely have a different way of being, and mocks God's wisdom in the following ways . . ." the petition reads.
"God is voiced by a woman," is among the reasons cited by the petition.
"In the end, this is a denial of Good and Evil: morality and natural law do not exist, just humanitarianism, and an ultimately useless creed," the petition concludes. "This is another step to make Satanism appear normal, light and acceptable. We must show our rejection. Please sign our petition, telling Netflix that we will not stand silent as they destroy the barriers of horror we still have for evil."
Among the mocking tweets:
- "Glorious. 20,000 people sign a petition calling for Good Omens to be removed from Netflix. Miraculously God has already done it. Don’t tell them She put it on Amazon instead." – Cheryl Morgan, a U.K. science fiction critic.
- "OMG, just checked Netflix, it's like Good Omens was never even there! These are powerful forces at work." – James Moran, a U.K. director.
