Gingrich: Obama Must 'Come Off His High Horse'

By    |   Friday, 27 September 2013 08:01 AM EDT

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich says Obama must "come off his high horse" and negotiate with congressional Republicans over the debt ceiling.

And House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, must admit that he may not be able to get everybody in his party to vote with him, Gingrich said Thursday on CNN's "Piers Morgan Live." Boehner might have to settle for 80 percent of Republicans and a substantial number of Democrats, he said.

Obama has said he will not negotiate with Republicans over raising the debt ceiling. The GOP wants to tie it to a reduction in spending.

Morgan played a clip of former President Bill Clinton from the previous night's broadcast saying, "We worked it out when he was trying to run me out of town. … It was a game to him."

Gingrich neither confirmed nor denied that theory, but did say that he and the Democratic president worked things out better than the current D.C. leaders.

"My guess is that we spent more days together than Obama and Boehner have spent minutes together this year," he said.

Gingrich likened himself and Clinton to two graduate students. The two would get in a room and start theorizing, he said, but in the process would get away from what they couldn't do, and figure out what they could do.

He ruled out another run for president in 2016, saying he's happy hosting "Crossfire" on CNN. But he said Hillary Clinton is 90-95 percent likely to be the Democratic nominee.

"No one should underestimate how serious a candidate she'd be," Gingrich said.
