Georgia has begun investigating a charity run by a church with connections to Sen. Raphael Warnock, D-Ga., for not registering with state authorities.
Georgia's Securities and Charities Division told The Washington Free Beacon that the Ebenezer Building Foundation, which is run by Ebenezer Baptist Church and lists Warnock as its principal officer, has not registered with authorities in the state. The division, which is part of the office of the Georgia Secretary of State, sent a letter to the foundation earlier this week asking the organization to explain why it has "not registered as a charitable organization with the State of Georgia."
The letter, signed by Securities and Charities Division Enforcement Staff member Christina Herd, noted that "charitable organizations that solicit or accept donations from Georgians are required to register with the Division in order [to] solicit or fundraise unless they are exempt from registration or excluded from the definition of 'charitable organization.'"
She asked the organization to "provide evidence stating on what basis Ebenezer Building Foundation is currently exempt ... and therefore not in violation of the Act and Rules."
