Former President George H.W. Bush is backing the city of Houston’s bid to host the 2020 Democratic National Convention.
In a tweet, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner released a copy of the letter Bush, a Republican, wrote to him supporting efforts to woo the Democrats.
Turner quoted a portion of the Bush letter in his tweet.
"Our facilities & hotels are world class, but it's really our people -- the spirit of our fellow Houstonians -- that makes the difference. No one works harder, no one is friendlier or more welcoming." -- Former President George H.W. Bush on our bid to host the @DNC 2020 convo."
In the letter, Bush could not resist having a little fun.
He wrote: "Of course, Mr. Mayor, I want to be clear that I am not also endorsing whoever might claim the DNC nomination in Houston at what I am sure would be the best political convention in modern history – unless it is you! Then I would have to think about it."
Houston is one of three cities in the running to host the convention, according to the Houston Chronicle. The city last hosted the convention in 1928.
