Gates: Prospects for Closing Gitmo 'Very, Very Low'

Thursday, 17 February 2011 11:41 AM EST

WASHINGTON - U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Thursday that prospects for closing the Guantanamo Bay detention camp were "very, very low" given broad opposition in the U.S. Congress.

President Barack Obama has so far not been able to meet his promise to close Guantanamo, but the White House said this week the president remained committed to doing so. U.S. lawmakers have balked at the prospect of bringing terrorism suspects to the United States for trial.
