In the wake of the tragic high school murders, the Florida House has advanced a bill requiring all state public schools to prominently display the words: "In God We Trust," NPR reports.

The bill passed in the House by a vote of 97-10 and now goes to the Florida Senate.

Democratic Rep. Kimberly Daniels, who also runs a ministry, introduced the bill. She maintained it is "so simple, just saying put a poster up to remind our children of the foundation of this country."

In speaking on behalf of the bill on the House floor, she made indirect reference to the 17 murders at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, NPR noted.

"It is not a secret that we have some gun issues that need to be addressed, but the real thing that needs to be addressed are issues of the heart," she said. "I believe it was God, and I heard a voice say, 'Do not politicize what has happened in Florida and do not make this a thing of division.' "

The bill passed the House a day after legislators voted against a measure to considering banning the sale of assault weapons, CNN noted.
