Rep. Charlie Crist, D-Fla., supports former Vice President Joe Biden's campaign for president, Crist announced Thursday in a statement to the Tampa Bay Times.
"Joe Biden's record of getting things done speaks for itself," Crist, who was governor of Florida as a Republican from 2007 to 2011, told the newspaper, crediting Biden's as the best candidate to draw "independent and disaffected Republicans" in Florida away from the GOP. "He has always put the American people above party lines and will continue to as president."
Crist, who supported the late Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., in the 2008 presidential election, changed his party affiliation to Democrat in 2012 before endorsing former President Barack Obama in his re-election campaign. Biden later supported Crist's unsuccessful gubernatorial campaign in 2014.
"We need a president whose objective at the end of the day is to move the country forward for everyone through action," Crist said, "not empty promises."
Two of Crist's fellow congressional Democrats also endorsed Biden, according to the Times, Reps. Emanuel Cleaver, D-Mo., and G.K. Butterfield, D-N.C. Biden already has the endorsement of former Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., and its former senator and Gov. Bob Graham. Crist is the second member of congress to endorse the former vice president, after his fellow Rep. Al Lawson, D-Fla.
