As of Sunday afternoon, more than 3,500 flights into, out of or within the United States have been delayed and 94 US flights have been canceled in what is expected to be one of the busiest travel days of the year on the last day of the Thanksgiving weekend, according to FlightAware.
A severe weather system in several areas of the United States, including widespread rain and gusty winds, is expected to impact millions of travelers from the Midwest to the Northeast and across the Southeast on Sunday, CNN reported.
The three major airports servicing New York City have been sounding out the alarm, with New York's LaGuardia Airport tweeting to passengers, "We can't stress this enough — plan ahead and arrive early if you're traveling during the #Thanksgiving holiday travel period."
John F. Kennedy Airport issued a similar warning on Twitter, telling travelers to "budget extra travel time to arrive at #JFK Airport, park in your reserved spot, check in, and get through security."
Newark Liberty International Airport also joined in the concern, informing passengers in a tweet that they should "take advantage of the FREE EWR VirtuaLine service and secure your spot in the security checkpoint line in advance."
