Iowa approved one of the strictest abortion laws in the United States this spring, but a majority of Iowa adults believes the "fetal heartbeat" limit on abortions goes too far, according to Des Moines Register.
The law, approved by a Republican-controlled legislature, would ban most abortions on fetuses with a detectable heartbeat, which can occur by the sixth week of pregnancy, according to the report. The law is currently being challenged in court, and pro choice activists now have a timely poll to point to.
The Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll finds 52 percent say the law goes too far, while 39 percent see the limit as appropriate.
The support for legal abortions has surged in the past decade, too, according to the Register:
- 54 percent support legal abortion now vs. 48 percent in the 2008 poll.
- 39 percent now believe abortion should be illegal vs. 46 percent in 2008.
The poll was conducted Sept. 17-20, sampling 801 Iowa adults with a margin of error of 3.5 percentage points.
