A former Democratic congressional candidate in Georgia was charged with murder in the death of the treasurer of her failed campaign.
Kellie Lynn Collins, 30, surrendered to authorities in Aiken, South Carolina, in the fatal shooting of Curt Cain, 41, the Augusta Chronicle reports.
An autopsy revealed that Cain died due to loss of blood, according to Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton.
Collins was a Democratic candidate for the 10th Congressional District seat in 2018, but withdrew from the race for personal reasons and was not on the ballot.
Her former campaign manager, Clayborn Thigpen, told the Chronicle that Cain and Collins were living together in Aiken, but he hadn’t talked to them in five months.
Cain had been close to finishing his MBA at USC Aiken, the school’s Chancellor Dr. Sandra Jordan told the Aiken Standard.
"Curt was a member of the third on-campus MBA cohort and was on the verge of completing the program next week. According to School of Business faculty, Curt was one of the top students in his class and had a promising future ahead of him," she said.
