Former Attorney General Eric Holder said Thursday the outrage over his "kick them" comment, which prompted a response from President Donald Trump, is "fake" because his words should not be taken literally.

Holder tweeted his thoughts two days after saying "when [Republicans] go low, we kick them."

That comment was a reference to when former First Lady Michelle Obama said Democrats should "go high" at the 2016 Democratic National Convention — and she doubled down on that remark Thursday morning.

"Ok, stop the fake outrage. I'm obviously not advocating violence. (In fact, when I was AG violent crime in the US was historically low.) I'm saying Republicans are undermining our democracy and Democrats need to be tough, proud and stand up for the values we believe in — the end," Holder tweeted Thursday afternoon.

Obama was on NBC's Today show Thursday morning and was asked if she stood by her claim that Democrats should "go high."

"Absolutely," she said. "Fear is not … a proper motivator. Hope wins out. And if you think about how you want your kids to be raised, how you want them to think about life and their opportunities, do you want them afraid of their neighbors? Do you want them angry? Do you want them vengeful?"

Trump addressed Holder's comments Thursday morning by calling them "disgusting" and "dangerous."
