Video footage from at least one camera in the hallway outside the cell where disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein was discovered hanging is unusable, The Washington Post is reporting.
However, clearer video was captured in the area, according to the newspaper, which attributed the information to three people briefed on the evidence surrounding the recent death of the registered sex offender at the Metropolitan Correction Center in downtown Manhattan
The circumstances around Epstein's suicide are under investigation by the FBI and the Justice Department's inspector general's office. The video footage is considered a key part of those inquiries, the newspaper noted.
According to the Post, it is not clear why some of the video is flawed. It is also uncertain whether the taping flaw affected a limited duration of the video or was a chronic problem at the jail.
The Bureau of Prisons, the Justice Department, and the U.S. Attorney's Office all declined comment on the Post story.
The newspaper noted the federal jail has been under intense scrutiny as a result of Epstein's death.
Attorney General William Barr said earlier this month that the facility had "serious irregularities" and he has vowed to pursue justice for the financier's victims.
"We are now learning of serious irregularities at this facility that are deeply concerning and demand a thorough investigation," Barr said.
