Report: EPA Plans Limits on Heavy-Duty Truck Emissions

The Environmental Protection Agency is reportedly ready to unveil new rules to decrease emissions of smog-forming nitrogen oxide from diesel highway heavy-duty trucks and engines.

A formal announcement is set for Tuesday for the "Cleaner Trucks Initiative," Reuters reported. But another administration official told the news agency the new proposed emissions rules might not be written and announced until 2020.

Nitrogen oxide emissions are linked to significant health impacts and can exacerbate asthma attacks.

According to Reuters, industry groups and state environmental officials have all urged the EPA to set new nationwide rules as California moves ahead with its own plans to set state emissions limits. More than half of all trucks delivering goods in the state are registered elsewhere, Reuters reported.

The effort is in contrast to the Trump administration's general efforts to eliminate regulations. In the case of nitrogen oxide, however, a limit is backed by the industry, which wants to avoid a patchwork of federal and state standards, Reuters reported.
