Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., says she would have agreed to run as Hillary Clinton's vice president in 2016, Bloomberg Businessweek reports.
Warren, a 2020 Democratic presidential hopeful, was fully vetted by Clinton's team at Clinton's Whitehaven, Washington home, and some advisers were convinced the Massachusetts lawmaker would be the best pick.
"If a crystal ball said she wouldn't antagonize you for four years, it's hard to argue she isn't the most helpful for the next four months to get you elected," longtime Hillary adviser Philippe Reines wrote in a memo to Hillary shortly after Sen. Warren's meeting with Hillary.
Warren endorsed Clinton late in the election, a move many Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., supporters loathed.
"There was an enormous amount of ill will that was the result of her declining to endorse anyone and deciding not to take a position until after the convention," Charles Lenchner, a co-founder of Ready for Warren, told Bloomberg. "Warren had a chance to help Bernie win when it was still possible — and she declined to do so."
Warren now faces Sanders in a crowded Democratic primary.
And she is OK with Clinton's decision to pass on her.
"It's never as good as doing it yourself," she told the outlet.
