House Oversight Committee Chair Elijah Cummings, D-Md., says special counsel Robert Mueller's report is a roadmap for impeachment and that doing "nothing" will embolden President Donald Trump.
"If we do nothing here, what is going to happen is that the president is going to be emboldened," Cummings told CBS's "Face the Nation." "He's going to be emboldened because he's said, 'Well, I got away with that.' . . .
"We cannot afford that. Our democracy cannot afford that."
Cummings told anchor Bob Schieffer the findings of Mueller's report laid out the "road map" for impeachment proceedings, even if the GOP-held Senate will not favor the vote passed in the Democratic-controlled House, causing impeachment to ultimately fail anyway and give a victory to Trump before the 2020 elections.
"It may very well, but do you know at some time, Bob, I've got to tell you, there comes a point in life where we all have to make decisions based upon the fact that it is our watch," Cummings said. "And, you know, history –– I think even if we did not win possibly, if there were not impeachment, I think history would smile upon us for standing up for the Constitution."
Cummings finished the interview with a call for whistleblowers to "come out to help us, call us" to help the House Democrat investigations of the president to pursue impeachment.
