Edward Klein: Obama Himself Scripted Bill Clinton's Attack on Healthcare Plan

Edward Klein: Obama Himself Scripted Bill Clinton's Attack on Healthcare Plan

By    |   Saturday, 08 October 2016 07:01 PM EDT

President Barack Obama himself approved Bill Clinton’s attack on the Affordable Care Act this week to help boost Hillary Clinton’s campaign because "all he cares about is saving Obamacare,” journalist Edward Klein said Saturday.

"I didn’t believe it at first, either,” Klein said of Bill Clinton’s attack on the president’s signature domestic program Tuesday in an interview with Tucker Carlson on Fox News.

The former president made the comments Tuesday at a rally in Flint, Mich. Ed Klein is the author of the new best-selling book, "Guilty as Sin,"  on Hillary Clinton.

"I called the Clinton campaign,” Klein said. "They said this is all coordinated with the White House.”

When Klein pressed further, he said this was the response from the campaign source: "They said that it is clear at this town hall meeting, Hillary’s greatest vulnerability will be a question ... about Obamacare no longer being the Affordable Care Act.”

He was referring to Sunday’s debate at Washington University in St. Louis.

"So, they decided that, rather than be defensive, let’s get our stuff together, so they coordinated with the president.”

Klein told Carlson that he worked the story further, calling an Obama administration source who is "close” to senior adviser Valerie Jarrett.

That source told Klein that Obama himself told Clinton: "‘Hey, let’s admit there’s a problem – and you, Hillary, can fix it. You can fix it.’

"Bill was looped into this whole thing,” Klein continued, "and Hillary is prepared, if this thing comes up … to say, ‘Yeah, we have a real problem.’”

When Carlson said that the scenario went against Obama’s longstanding demands for loyalty among fellow Democrats, Klein responded that the president designed the attack to protect Obamacare and help Clinton’s campaign.

"All he cares about is saving Obamacare,” he said. "That’s his great legacy – and he knows he’s in trouble on that score.

"Not only by criticizing it,” Klein added, "we’re saying that we’ve got a way to fix it – and this guy, [Donald] Trump, he’s going to throw it out the window.

"We’re not going to throw it out the window,” he said. "We’re going to make it affordable again.”
