Amazon has a team of roughly 12 people working on developing driverless technology to help deliver packages to customers quicker.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the Seattle-based company does not have any current plans to build a fleet of self-driving vehicles. The project, which began more than a year ago, is aiming to come up with ways to leverage driverless vehicles in its business.
Examples of what could be developed to improve Amazon's workflow include forklifts, trucks, and drones, the Journal reported.
The Journal's sources said Amazon hosted an event last week that centered on the future of transportation. Multiple companies were represented at the event, although it is not clear which ones.
"Amazon has a plan in place to shake up the entire supply chain as we know it today," automotive analyst Dave Sullivan told the Journal.
Several tech and car companies are working on developing self-driving car technology. Some of Tesla's cars have the capability, but federal laws prevent them from being fully autonomous on the road. Uber, Apple, Google parent company Alphabet, and General Motors are also developing the technology.
The Journal reported Amazon might be interested in self-driving tractor trailers down the road, since human truckers are only allowed to drive 10 hours a day under federal law.
Amazon has also been working on delivery drones and wants to someday launch a flying warehouse.
