YouGov Poll: Trump Tied With Biden, Up 46 Points in GOP

By    |   Wednesday, 20 September 2023 12:29 PM EDT

Former President Donald Trump's surge against President Joe Biden in the hypothetical 2024 presidential rematch continues, as he is now tied at 44% apiece in the latest YouGov poll released Wednesday.

Trump is particularly strong among registered voters 45-64 years of age, leading Biden by 15 points (51%-36%). Also, Trump is up 12 points on Biden on the issue of being fit to serve as president, and 77% say Biden's age is at least some of a problem for his reelection hopes, including a majority 52% saying it is a "big problem."

Biden had led by 6 points in last month's edition of the poll, but Trump "appears to be gaining momentum," as Yahoo News reported.

Not only is Trump stronger against the incumbent, but he maintains full control of the Republican primary polling at 46 points over Florida GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis and the field.

While Trump is tied with Biden, DeSantis trails by 3, albeit just outside the polling margin of error.

The full GOP primary polling results:

  1. Trump 59%
  2. DeSantis 13%
  3. South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley 5%
  4. Entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy 5%
  5. Former Vice President Mike Pence 3%
  6. Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., 1%
  7. South Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum 1%
  8. Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie 1%

Former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson and conservative broadcaster Larry Elder both received less than 1% support, polling at 0%. There were 9% undecided and 2% saying they would not vote.

When considering a two-candidate race between Trump and DeSantis, registered voters chose Trump by 43 points at 65%-22%.

Trump's GOP primary support is even higher against the GOP field among self-described Hispanic voters at 71% and 80% among Hispanic voters in the head-to-head matchup versus DeSantis.

YouGov sampled 1,636 U.S. adults from Sept. 14-18, including 1,097 registered voters and 470 registered Republicans and independents who lean Republican. The results for the full sample have a margin of error of plus or minus 2.7 percentage points. No margin of error was given for the subsets of registered voters or GOP primary voters.
