Donald Trump will be meeting with the National Rifle Association to discuss not allowing people on the terrorist watch list to buy guns, the presumptive Republican nominee has tweeted.

Trump's announcement comes as Senate Democrats, following Orlando's nightclub massacre, have increased pressure on Republicans to back their plan that would ban people on federal terror watch lists from buying firearms, Politico reports.

That position, CNBC reports, is also supported by Republican Sen. Pat Toomey, who has been working together with Democrats on gun control legislation since the 2012 mass shooting that killed 20 elementary school children in Connecticut.

But it is opposed by the NRA, which endorsed Trump for president in May. The NRA says such measures are ineffective or unconstitutional in that they deny due process for someone falsely on the terror watch list.

The pro-gun group said Wednesday it will be happy to meet with Trump, but that it's not changing its position.

The gun lobby then expounded on that.

"Anyone on a terror watchlist who tries to buy a gun should be thoroughly investigated by the FBI and the sale delayed while the investigation is ongoing," the statement said.

"If an investigation uncovers evidence of terrorist activity or involvement, the government should be allowed to immediately go to court, block the sale, and arrest the terrorist. At the same time, due process protections should be put in place that allow law-abiding Americans who are wrongly put on a watchlist to be removed."

It is unclear what Trump's current views are on the subject. Following last November's terrorist attacks in Paris that killed 130 people, Trump told ABC that "If somebody is on a watch list and an enemy of state and we know it’s an enemy of state, I would keep them away, absolutely."

But he failed to endorse the Democrats' legislation, claiming that such cases were already covered in the law.
