President Donald Trump said Friday he is "committing" to having the United States abide by Article 5 of the NATO treaty, which says an attack on one member nation is an attack on all members.

Trump was asked about it during a joint White House press conference with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis.

"Well, I'm committing the United States and have committed, but I'm committing the United States to Article 5," Trump said. "Certainly we are there to protect. That's one of the reasons that I want people to make sure we have a very, very strong force by paying the kind of money necessary to have that force.

"Yes, absolutely I would be committed to Article 5."

Politico posted a short clip of Trump's mention of Article 5.

Trump's feelings on NATO in recent months have been tepid, and he has demanded that all member nations pay the 2 percent of their GDP required by the treaty.

Until Friday, he had not said whether he would follow Article 5 if another NATO member was attacked. During a speech at NATO headquarters last month, Trump did not reference Article 5 after reportedly deleting a line in his speech that would have pledged America's commitment to it.
