In the wake of comments Republican candidate for president Donald Trump made about Mexican immigrants, NBC is starting to distance itself from the real estate mogul.
Trump co-owns the Miss Universe organization, which includes the Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants that are broadcast on NBC, and has worked with the network on his long-running show "The Apprentice."
Now that he's running for president, however, NBC may sever ties with Trump because of FCC rules regarding presidential candidates.
Trump already stepped aside from "The Apprentice" because of his campaign.
On Thursday, NBC released a statement that made it clear the network does not stand with Trump on his immigration comments.
"Donald Trump's opinions do not represent those of NBC, and we do not agree with his positions on a number of issues, including his recent comments on immigration," the statement reads,
according to Entertainment Weekly.
Last week,
Trump caused a stir when he said some illegal immigrants from Mexico are rapists.
"The U.S. has become a dumping ground for everybody else's problems," Trump said when he announced his candidacy last week. "When Mexico sends its people, they're not sending their best … They're sending people that have lots of problems, and they're bringing those problems with us. They're bringing drugs. They're bringing crime. They're rapists. And some, I assume, are good people."
Also in his announcement speech, Trump said, "I will be the greatest jobs president that God ever created. I will bring back our jobs from China, from Mexico, from Japan, from so many places."
Trump's comments about Mexico promoted Univision, a Spanish television network, to end its plan to broadcast the Miss Universe pageant scheduled for July 12.
Trump responded by saying Univision will be liable for breaking a contract he had with it.
Trump also told Newsmax TV Univision will "pay a very big price" in an interview that will air Monday.
"If you look at how Mexico is ripping us off in trade, ripping us off at the border, I exposed it, and because of that Univision sent us a notice saying they can't even do it," Trump said. "I have a fantastic lawsuit. I'll sue them for a lot of money and that's fine, but they wanted me to be silent and I can't be silent."
