President Donald Trump on Monday announced that he told the Federal Emergency Management Agency to give Alabama “the A Plus treatment” following a series of devastating tornadoes in the state.
“FEMA has been told directly by me to give the A Plus treatment to the Great State of Alabama and the wonderful people who have been so devastated by the Tornadoes,” Trump tweeted Monday morning, after at least 23 people were killed in Lee County, Alabama where two tornadoes hit over the weekend.
He added that Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey, a Republican, is “one of the best in our Country, [and] has been so informed. She is working closely with FEMA (and me!).”
In 2017, Trump faced widespread criticism for his response in Puerto Rico to Hurricane Maria, which killed 2,975 people, despite his strong response to Hurricane Harvey in Texas that same year. Last year he threatened to cut federal funding to California after it was hit by several deadly wildfires.
