Former President Donald Trump said he will never call for restrictions on birth control.
"I have never, and will never advocate imposing restrictions on birth control, or other contraceptives," Trump wrote Tuesday on Truth Social. "This is a Democrat fabricated lie, misinformation/disinformation, because they have nothing else to run on except failure, poverty, and death. I do not support a ban on birth control, and neither will the Republican Party."
Trump's post on Truth Social came after he told a TV station in Pittsburgh "we're looking at that," after being asked if he supports any restrictions to access to contraception.
"I'm going to have a policy on that very shortly and I think it's something you'll find interesting," Trump said. "I think it's a smart decision. We'll be releasing it very soon."
Trump said some states would have different policies than others. A Trump spokesman told NBC News that Trump "would be making his announcement regarding mifepristone in the near future" and that "President Trump has never advocated for restrictions on contraceptives."
President Joe Biden's campaign seized on Trump's comments, sharing the video on its social media channels.
The Trump administration issued a regulation expanding the kinds of employers who can remove birth control coverage based on religious or moral objections, NBC News reported. The regulation was upheld by the Supreme Court in 2020.
In an interview with Time magazine, Trump said it would be up to states on monitoring pregnancies so the government would know if a woman had an abortion. Trump also said it was up to states if a woman should be punished for getting an abortion.
Trump appointed three justices to the Supreme Court who voted to overturn Roe v. Wade in 2022, ending the federal constitutional right to an abortion.
