Doctors’ Group Urges Voters to Back Candidates Opposing Obamacare

By    |   Friday, 02 November 2012 05:16 PM EDT

Doctors from more than 20 states are urging voters on Tuesday to oppose Obamacare and support “candidates that keep the patient-physician relationship sacred.”

The physicians, in association with the Doctor Patient Medical Association, based in Arlington, Va., have taken out full-page ads in five regional editions of USA Today that will be run in 11 states and in Washington, D.C., on Monday.

The ad is expected to be seen in the battleground states of Colorado, Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. It also will be seen in Illinois, Maryland, Utah, South Dakota, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

Addressed as “A Letter From America’s Doctors to Our Patients,” the ad encourages patients to vote to ensure that the care they need comes without interference from governments and insurance companies.

The doctors represent a broad range of medical specialties and advocacy groups. The association also has taken to Twitter and other social media in its campaign.

“You have heard from the politicians,” the ad begins. “We’d like to share what America’s working doctors think.

It later adds: “We can no longer stand back and watch the dismantlement of America’s healthcare system. We know we can make it better and we are asking for that opportunity.”

The ad also points to a recent poll by the association saying that 83 percent of doctors said they were considering leaving medicine because of increasing regulation and interference in the doctor-patient relationship.

“Patients won’t be able to find a doctor unless we turn this around,” Mark Schiller, a San Francisco psychiatrist and founder of the Mind Therapy Clinic, says in the ad.

“I want to focus on what is best for my patients and not what a government official deems cost effective,” says Marcy Zwelling, a California physician, in the ad.
