US to Expel Cuban Diplomats After Havana Sonic Attacks

The State Department plans to expel roughly 60 percent of Cuban diplomats stationed in the United States in response to mysterious sonic attacks that targeted more than two dozen American diplomats in Havana.

McClatchy reported the State Department could make an announcement regarding the mass exodus as soon as Tuesday.

Twenty-five Americans, some of whom work in the intelligence community, were attacked with what is believed to be sonic weapons while they were in their Havana homes and/or in hotels over the past several months. Symptoms have ranged from hearing loss to mild traumatic brain injuries.

Publicly, the United States has not accused anyone of being behind the attacks. McClatchy quoted a source who said, "Cuba is not upholding its commitments of the Vienna convention, of protecting diplomats."

It was reported last week the United States believed someone other than the Cuban government is responsible.

As a result of the injuries suffered to Americans, however, the State Department is pulling 60 percent of its diplomats out of Havana.

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., said over the weekend he would like to see the State Department expel Cuban diplomats from Washington.
