DeSantis' COVID-19 Response Could Help in '24 GOP Primary Field

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis' response in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic could make a difference among conservative voters if he runs for president in 2024, Axios reported.

DeSantis' stock rose in the minds of many conservatives when DeSantis did such things as fighting against vaccine mandates, and reopening schools for in-person learning earlier than other states, Axios reported.

"DeSantis is a conservative rock star in large part because of how he handled COVID in Florida," GOP strategist Alex Conant, who worked on Sen. Marco Rubio's campaign in 2016, told Axios.

"He'll certainly make the implicit contrast with [former President Donald] Trump. Whether he makes an explicit contrast at some point depends on how the campaign plays out."

Recent surveys have solidified DeSantis' standing as Trump's strongest challenger for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination — assuming the governor enters the race. Trump officially began his campaign last month.

A Marquette Law School poll showed DeSantis and President Joe Biden deadlocked in a virtual tie for the 2024 presidential general election.

However, an Emerson College survey showed Trump holding a 30-point lead over DeSantis in the race for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.

In terms of COVID-19 response, DeSantis has said he wishes he had been more vocal in speaking out against the Trump administration's calls for lockdowns early in the pandemic, Axios reported.

Trump announced a 15-day national shutdown in mid-March 2020, and that shutdown was extended after the virus continued to spread.

"DeSantis made some decisions early on that the federal response didn't make any sense as applied to Florida," said Joe Grogan, director of the Domestic Policy Council under Trump and a member of Trump's coronavirus task force.

"So DeSantis was set up as a foil for the federal government's response."

National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Anthony Fauci, whose actions surrounding COVID-19 have been criticized by conservatives, was a key member of the Trump's COVID-19 response team.

"He introduced the country to Dr. Fauci, and the far right is not going to forget that," Brendan Buck, a former adviser to ex-House Speaker Paul Ryan, told Axios.

"Not that Trump handled the pandemic like Dr. Fauci would have wanted him to, but if you're looking at a way to hit him from the right, that's a big fat target."

Axios reported that independents and some conservatives, for different reasons, take issue with Trump's COVID-19 response.

"Trump's handling of COVID is clearly one of the president's biggest vulnerabilities with independent voters and conservative voters for very different reasons," Conant said. "No one is going to forget putting bleach in bodies and downplaying the initial threat, and conservatives won't forgive him for pushing some of the more restrictive policies."
