Several Democratic offices in the Capitol have temporarily switched out flags memorializing prisoners of war with flags promoting transgender pride, The Washington Free Beacon reports.
Reps. Kim Schrier, D-Wash., and Pete Aguilar, D-Calif., both removed the POW flags that stood outside their offices and replaced them with transgender pride flags ahead of International Transgender Day of Visibility this Sunday.
“As a proud member of the [LGBT Caucus], I will do everything I can to make sure transgender people [won’t be erased] by violence, fear or prejudice. I am committed to safety and equality for all,” Schrier tweeted on Wednesday.
"We were asked to fly the Transgender Equality flag by the National Center for Transgender Equality this week ahead of Transgender Visibility Day on Sunday," a spokesperson for her office told the Free Beacon. "Our POWMIA flag has been in the Congresswoman's office this week. And will be back outside our office tomorrow."
Many congressional Democrats, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., also placed transgender pride flags outside their offices this week. Some, like Reps. Adam Smith, D-Wash., and Ann Kirkpatrick, D-Ariz., hung both flags outside their offices, alongside the American flag and their state flag.
