Franken to Letterman: Run for Senate to Annoy Gov. Mike Pence

"Late Show" host David Letterman has made no secret that he is unhappy with Mike Pence, the governor of his home state of Indiana, over that state's recent religious freedom law.

On Wednesday's show, former comedian and current Minnesota Sen. Al Franken joined Letterman in criticizing the law that opponents say allows for discrimination against gay people. Proponents say it only allows people such as photographers and caterers from participating in same-sex weddings.

Letterman, who is about to retire from his talk show, asked Franken what he can do "to make the governor feel uncomfortable?"

Franken said there is an open Senate seat coming up with Sen. Dan Coats' impending retirement.

"Look, when young people come to me, they say, 'How do you become a United States senator?" And I say, 'Well, do about 35, 40 years of comedy, and then run for the Senate. You know, it's worked every time. So I think you should run."

Letterman made Pence the butt of his Top Ten lists on Tuesday and Wednesday. On Tuesday, he said, "This is not the Indiana I remember as a kid."
