The United States and Russia must work together to "defeat this evil that threatens the planet," said Rep. Dana Rohrabacher Monday, referring to radical Islam.
Rohrabacher told Fox News' "Fox & Friends" that he agreed with President-elect Donald Trump's call to improve relations with Russia, because it seems like the current administration "wants to get back to the Cold War with such hostility."
"During the Cold War, we were up against the Soviet Union, not Russia. Russia and the people of Russia are good people and they have a chance to work with them to defeat this evil that threatens the planet right now," the California Republican told the program.
According to a report in the Washington Examiner, Trump is eyeing Rohrabacher and diplomat John Bolton for secretary of State.
"John Bolton is a very good friend and I agree with him in most things," Rohrabacher said. "I have certain areas where we disagree and it happens to be in those only areas where we disagree…
"John Bolton is certainly willing to work with me on that and work with the president and I think we can accomplish a lot."
When asked about Trump's call with Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen, the congressman said "it's terrific."
"This again will demonstrate that by not just paying attention to the norms — he didn't violate any treaties by doing that — by doing that and picking up that phone and for the first time having a conversation with the elected president of Taiwan, he showed the dictators in Beijing that he's not a pushover," Rohrabacher added.
China has an "enormously aggressive" foreign policy, he continued, and Trump counteracted that.
"He's showing the people in Beijing that they cannot have this aggressive foreign policy and expect to be treated just the same by an American president," he said.
"And, there's going to be consequences for their hostile and aggressive actions."
