A retired Navy SEAL recently elected to the House reached out to the comedian who made fun of his eyepatch this week after the latter posted what appeared to be a cry for help on social media.
Rep.-elect Dan Crenshaw, R-Texas, talked with KPRC-TV in Houston about "Saturday Night Live" cast member Pete Davidson, who wrote on Instagram over the weekend, "I don't want to be on this earth anymore."
Shortly before Crenshaw won in last month's midterm elections, Davidson made fun of his eyepatch — which Crenshaw wears because he lost an eye during a combat mission in Afghanistan. The pair made up on the next week's episode and Davidson apologized.
"It was pretty devastating, you know, you don't want to see somebody in that kind of position to the point where they're actually putting out a cry for help on social media," Crenshaw told KPRC on Monday. "That's not a good place to be in.
"I talked to him personally [Tuesday] and talked to him for a little bit about it. We don't go back very far. We're not good friends, but I think he appreciated hearing from me."
Crenshaw beat Democrat Todd Litton in last month's election to represent Texas' 2nd Congressional District. He told Davidson no one's life is worthless.
"What I told him is this: 'Everybody has a purpose in this world. God put you here for a reason. But it's your job to find that purpose. You should live that way, always seeking out that purpose. Not expecting it to be given to you by anybody else. Know that you have value and that you do more good than you realize for people,'" Crenshaw said.
"Especially a guy like that, he makes people laugh. Sometimes he makes people mad. But he makes people laugh a lot, and that's what we talked about. It was a good conversation."
