Sen. Corker: IRS Mess Will Affect Other Federal Agencies and Programs

By    |   Saturday, 18 May 2013 10:05 AM EDT

The fallout from the Internal Revenue Service targeting scandal is going to be felt in many other federal agencies and programs, including Obamacare and immigration reform, Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker says.

"This episode is going to have a big effect … There are multiple, multiple issues that have to be addressed,'' Corker told "The Steve Malzberg Show'' on Newsmax TV.

"This is a wakeup call for all of those who see our large government and the way people can be coerced … For instance, as we move to immigration reform, just being aware … of judgments that take place within organizations.''

Corker, a ranking member of the Committee on Foreign Relations and a member of the Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, said he expects the IRS will be under microscope for a long time to come.

"This is chilling what the IRS has done and this is probably going to play out over a long period of time before we get to the bottom of it,'' he said.

"Especially when your lead witness, outgoing [Acting IRS Commissioner Steven Miller] has as little knowledge to put forth apparently as he had today.''

Corker called IRS is "an institution everybody in America understands … They understand how oppressive the IRS can be if they choose to do so.''

He said the scandal will become even more relevant as Obamacare is implemented because the IRS is in charge of enforcing its mandatory health- insurance clause.

"People are going to realize that there are multiple, multiple issues that have to be addressed.''
