Bill Clinton: No Aliens at Area 51

Bill Clinton: No Aliens at Area 51

By    |   Thursday, 03 April 2014 06:39 AM EDT

Former President Bill Clinton admitted to talk show host Jimmy Kimmel on Wednesday that he looked at classified files on Roswell and Area 51 to see whether the United States had been visited by space aliens.

Noting a science fiction movie that said an alien is buried far beneath Area 51, a secret government facility in remote Nevada, Clinton said he had his staff comb through the files when he was president. He also had them look at files on Roswell, N.M., where some people believe a spacecraft crashed in 1947, killing the alien onboard.

"If you saw that there were aliens there would you tell us?" Kimmel asked.

"Yeah. I would," Clinton assured him.

Still, the former president said, there are so many stars with planets possibly suitable for life, "If we were visited someday I wouldn't be surprised."

He just hopes that if they do it's not like the movie "Independence Day," where the aliens attacked Earth.

"It may be the only way to unite this incredibly divided world of ours," he said, noting that all our differences would seem small. Fox News host Bill O'Reilly "would take back every mean thing he said about me," Clinton said.

Clinton also told Kimmel that most days he doesn't miss being president.

"l loved doing the job, but one of the most important things … when you’re doing something you know you can’t do forever, you’ve got to organize your life so you don’t spend a minute, if possible, wishing you could do something you can’t do," he said.

Clinton wouldn't say whether his wife, Hillary, plans to run for president again in 2016, but did tell Kimmel he wouldn't consider running for vice president himself because "It would undermine the spirit of the Constitution."

Though Clinton could technically serve as vice president, he is barred constitutionally from assuming office should something happen to the president. He already has served the maximum two terms in the Oval Office.

Clinton was called the "first black president" by Toni Morrison in a 1998 New Yorker article,  but he told Kimmel that while he enjoyed the title, "Barack Obama really is, he deserves it."

On Toronto mayor Rob Ford, who has admitted to smoking crack, but refuses to step down, Clinton said, "He has absolutely destroyed every stereotype that people have about Canadians."
