Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., has called for an investigation into Postmaster General Louis DeJoy over allegations that he violated campaign finance laws, CBS News reports.

According to The Washington Post, five employees of New Breed Logistics, the company that DeJoy led for more than three decades, reported that they were "urged by DeJoy's aides or by the chief executive himself to write checks and attend fundraisers" at his mansion in Greensboro, North Carolina. Two employees also claimed that DeJoy offered to raise their bonuses "to help defray the cost of their contributions,” a violation of campaign finance law.

"These are very serious allegations that must be investigated immediately, independent of [President] Donald Trump's Justice Department," Schumer said in a statement on Sunday.

North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein tweeted following the Post report: "It is against the law to directly or indirectly reimburse someone for a political contribution. Any credible allegations of such actions merit investigation by the appropriate state and federal authorities."

Schumer added in his statement that "The North Carolina Attorney General, an elected official who is independent of Donald Trump, is the right person to start this investigation."

A spokesperson for DeJoy told the Post that "Mr. DeJoy was never notified by the New Breed employees referenced by the Washington Post of any pressure they might have felt to make a political contribution, and he regrets if any employee felt uncomfortable for any reason.”

DeJoy previously denied paying back his employees for contributions to Trump’s campaign during testimony at a House oversight hearing in August.
