Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said the U.S. must prevent Russia from interfering in the 2020 elections.
His comments came Wednesday after Robert Mueller discussed the findings in the special counsel’s report.
“Russia attempted successfully to interfere in our elections,” Schumer told reporters. A video of his remarks was posted by The Washington Post.
“We cannot let any foreign country interfere in our elections – whether it be Russia, China, North Korea, Iran, Turkey or anyone else,” he said.
Schumer maintained it is important for the president and Republican leadership in the Senate to join with Democrats and provide money to help local election boards protect themselves.
“It’s clear as a bell, whatever side you’re on politically that Russia interfered,” Schumer said. “It’s also clear as a bell if we sit here and do nothing it’s going to be worse in 2020. Faith in democracy will erode and that’s very bad for America.
“This report is a wake-up call. We must get right on the horse – Johnny on the pony – and stop Russia from interfering in the 2020 election because it is clear as a bell they did in 2016.”
