Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer gave credit to President Donald Trump, Mitch McConnell, and federal workers as the government shutdown comes to an end.
In a brief Senate floor speech that followed Trump's announcement of a deal being struck to end the five-week shutdown, Schumer said Democrats are ready to get down to business to come up with a solution to border security. Trump is giving lawmakers three weeks to work out a deal to fund the Department of Homeland Security for the year, which includes money for the border.
"I want to thank President Trump and Leader McConnell. As just outlined, we have agreed to pass a clean, three-week continuing resolution to reopen the government," Schumer said.
"After over a month of increasing desperation, our dedicated public servants will get the relief and the paychecks they are entitled to, including backpay. From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank federal workers who worked so selflessly this past month. They should never have to go through this again."
The shutdown began over a disagreement on funding for a border wall between the United States and Mexico. Schumer said Democrats do not believe any additional sections of wall should be built, but he said the stakeholders in the debate — members of both parties from both chambers of Congress — will work together to come to an agreement.
"As soon as the president signs the legislation to open government, we in Congress will roll up our sleeves. I genuinely hope that this process can produce something that is good for the country and acceptable to both sides," Schumer said.
