House Democrats will need to compromise on wall and border funding if they expect to get their other domestic spending needs addressed, Rep. Chuck Fleischmann, a member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee, said Tuesday.
"The Democrats have other priorities than we do, but we have the Senate; we have the White House," the Tennessee Republican told Fox News' "America's Newsroom." "The Democrats only control one-third of the process...it will get done."
President Donald Trump, in his latest budget proposal, calls for more money for the wall and defense, while cutting non-defense spending by 5 percent, and Fleischmann said that's a "step in the right direction" but much more work needs to be done before a budget passes.
"We task the executive branch, the president, with the job of coming up with a budget," said Fleischmann. "That's a framework, that's just a start of the process. The House and Senate will weigh in...ultimately we will have to sit down, work through each and every appropriations bill and move forward."
The country's fiscal year begins on Oct. 1, Fleischmann added, and he believes a budget will be passed, despite Democrats' "posturing."
"We have to keep this country safe and secure," said Fleischmann. ."The situation at the border is a crisis with a capital C, I think the president has done an outstanding job in this regard. I will join him and help him in building the wall and making sure that we have border security. I have to think our friends in the Senate will do that."
