A Chinese Christian and his wife are among more than a dozen people still being held in a Chinese prison after they were discovered practicing their religion.

According to The New York Times, Wang Yi — a prominent essayist and civil rights lawyer in China — founded the Early Rain Covenant Church and assembled a parish of 500 people. In December, however, Chinese authorities swooped in and arrested several of the church members, including Wang and his wife, the latter two on charges of inciting to subvert state power.

Today, according to the Times, 13 people are still being held and they are not allowed to see a lawyer. People who were released lost their jobs and/or had their bank accounts frozen.

The Times reported Wang and two junior pastors at his church could also be charged with crimes related to publishing material without seeking the approval of the Chinese government.

China has been accused of cracking down on Christians and Muslims for practicing their faith within the communist country's borders.
